The Good German

This was a 1940s movie. Remarkably so. The visuals looked just like watching a tv movie with Mom on a summer afternoon. I was amazed. The lighting, the camera angles, it was just like it was from the 40s (or old, anyway). The problem was, the story was an old one, too. There was not enough going on, not enouch action not enough suspense, not enough anything. I like George Clooney, I like Cate Blanchett. But, I did not like this movie much. Oh well.

Bad reviews kept me from seeing this one when it was in theatres, but I'm curious to see it now.

Speaking of movies from the 40s, between bottle feedings and diaper changings I recently finished The Best Years of Our Lives, the Academy Award winner for Best Picture of 1946. Over the past couple of years, I've been working my way back through Oscar winners of years past. I skipped 1947's The Gentleman's Agreement, but will pick it up soon. Once I've seen it, I will have seen all the Best Picture winners back to 1941's How Green Was My Valley.

I enjoy being surprised by old films that deal with mature themes. The Best Years of Our Lives deals with the troubles endured by war veterans and features a memorable award-winning performance by a double amputee.
